PolyCon Successfully Completes NFPA 286 and Appendix X Testing with Top Three Intumescent Coatings
Upgrade Your Insulation Offering
PolyCon’s PC 450 Open Cell Insulation, PC 500 Open Cell Insulation and PC 2000 HFO Closed Cell Insulation have officially passed the rigorous NFPA 286 and Appendix X fire testing with the use of the top three industry Intumescent Coatings: Paint to Protect DC 315, No Burn Plus ThB Spray Seal and Flame Control 60-60A.
What Is NFPA 286 and Appendix X?
NFPA 286 (Room Corner Burn Test)
Allows spray foam to be used exposed in occupiable spaces (e.g. basements, attics, crawlspaces) without a thermal barrier gypsum board.
If the foam system (spray foam + intumescent coating) passes, it can be listed for use in specific fire-exposed areas, which expands design flexibility.
Appendix X (Room Fire test for Attics & Crawlspaces)
Appendix X provides prescriptive fire testing criteria for ignition barriers in nonoccupied spaces like attics and crawlspaces. Passing this test means the coated spray foam can be used in these areas without requiring additional ignition barrier materials (e.g. mineral board, sheetrock).
Key Advantages of PolyCon SPF with Qualified Intumescent Coatings :
Enhances Fire Performance
- Coatings slow heat transfer to the foam
- Reduces flame spread and smoke development
- Helps maintain structural integrity longer in a fire
Design Flexibility
- Foam can be left exposed without needing to cover with drywall
- Can be used in retrofit or tight access areas where traditional barrier is impractical
Code Compliance
- Crucial tests for Commercial, Institutional and Multi-family projects
Improved Profit Margins
- Fewer materials and labor = higher contractor profitability
- Makes open cell foam more price competitive
- Boosts your value proposition to builders and homeowners
- Promotes fire safety, efficiency, and simplicity in one system
Real-World Applications:
- Unoccupiable spaces such as basements, attics and crawlspaces
